Under supervision, receives, prepares and microscopically screens specimens of body fluids and other cellular materials in order to detect the presence of cancer and other pathological conditions. Maintains records, performs related clerical duties, and prepares reports. Job requires knowledge, skill, and ability to provide care for a neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patient population.
Must possess a high school level of knowledge plus 4 years of college with 12 semester hours in science, at least 8 of which must be in biological science. It must include also completion of a twelve month cytotechnology course accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association. Must be registered or registry eligible as a CT (ASCP).
Work requires six months on-the-job experience. Some analytical ability necessary to operate various laboratory instruments, gather information, and prepare reports.
Computer skills necessary.
Maintains certification in CPR.
