The Specialist II is responsible for: working with the area supervisor and department manager to maintain technical and procedural operations in the Section; researching, developing and implementing new or improved procedures and instrumentation; performing quality control, quality improvement and regulatory compliance tasks; and assisting the supervisor with his/her responsibilities, particularly training, quality assurance, and project development/ implementation.

1. Understands and demonstrates Children's Hospital Staff Core Competencies
2. Demonstrates knowledge of and upholds applicable laws and regulations related to position. Maintains knowledge of techniques, procedures, and protocols, lab-wide and within lab section. Reviews and acknowledges procedures as required.
3. Assists Manager by serving as a liaison with the college of American Pathologists (CAP) and may help coordinate the inspections by CAP for all laboratory locations. Organizes the selection of CAP survey materials and reviews performance. Assists Manager with the Laboratory Inspection Team to prepare for inspections, this includes the self-inspections performed during non-survey years.
4. Develops, writes, reviews and updates procedures as requested.
5. Coordinates Laboratory Safety training and education for all laboratory staff members.In Technical Areas:
6. Demonstrates the discipline-specific technical and computer skills required for the appropriate section of the laboratory.
7. Maintains a safe environment. Wears appropriate personal protective equipment as designated by lab area. Reports spills and hazardous situations immediately and acts appropriately. Follows established guidelines for disclosure of patient information.
8. Responsible for overseeing training for all employees during orientation period, new procedures/updates and maintaining appropriate documentation.
9. Demonstrates the initiative and ability to provide feedback that is useful and assists in individual improvement. Promotes a cohesive work environment and identifies resolutions to improve moral.
10. Demonstrates the ability to make determinations regarding course of action and alternatives by addressing problems by using resolutions and basic troubleshooting skills. Able to resolve technical, computer, and customer service problems/concerns with in the lab section.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
1. Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical or biological science or clinical laboratory science; and a certification as a Medical Technologist (MT)/Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Category Technologist/Specialist by an approved agency. - OR - Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) certification with a Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical or biological science or clinical laboratory science and significant experience in a similar laboratory. As of June 1, 2015: If not certified, must be eligible for certification by an approved agency. Certification exam must be completed within 3 years of hire date. If the candidate is hired but has not taken exam, they must take the exam within 3 years, or will be moved to a suitable position that does not require certification. Exceptions include those already working in the department prior to June 1, 2015 and those staff who have been in a related position for 10 years or longer.
2. At least 3-5 years of experience related to quality control/quality assurance and troubleshooting in a similar laboratory setting.
3. Ability to work independently under minimal supervision and communicate effectively with department staff and internal/external customers.
MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to stand or sit for more than 1 hour at a time. Good visual and auditory acuity. Full use of hands and arms. Ability to speak clearly. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds occasionally.
