Functioning within the Health System mission, values, objectives, procedures and policies, the Coder Specialist codes all physician office medical records as assigned by reviewing the entire medical record to determine if the documentation supports the code assignment as well as reviewing the chart for any specific regulations such as medical necessity. The coder is accountable to the Manager of Medical Records.
Education: An Associates degree or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Licensure/Certification: Current CPC or AHIMA Certified Coder or RHIA/RHIT certification is required.
Experience: A minimum of two years of coding experience in a physicians office or hospital setting is
Skills: Must be knowledgeable in grouper mechanics, medical necessity, clinical documentations, RACs and
other review processes and demonstrate proficiency with reimbursement and MS-DRGs. Basic competency
with Word and Excel is also required. Knowledge of Quantim encoder and Meditech is strongly preferred. .
